A cargo ship carrying 21,300 tons of wheat has arrived at the Port of Latakia from Ukraine, with the shipment set to be distributed across Syrian provinces by rail.

According to officials overseeing the unloading and distribution process, portions of the wheat will be delivered to the provinces of Aleppo, Hama, and Latakia and allocated to local bakeries immediately after offloading at the port.

This marks the first time since 2011 that wheat shipments will be transported by train from Latakia to other provinces—a significant development following years of halted railway operations under the former regime.

Approximately 2,000 tons of the shipment will be delivered to Hama via railway.

Officials noted that rail transport not only reduces costs for traders but also provides faster and safer delivery. It is worth recalling that Ukraine sent 500 tons of wheat flour to Syria as humanitarian aid on December 27, 2024, following the fall of the Assad regime.

Syria is currently facing a severe drought that has negatively impacted agricultural yields. Before the outbreak of conflict in 2011, the country produced an estimated 4 million tons of wheat annually.
