Bassam Ishaq to “Welat TV”: The Israel-Iran War Pressures Syria Politically

Welat TV – Erbil

Bassam Ishaq, a member of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) Representation in Washington, confirmed that Israel’s tactical strikes on Iran serve the negotiations between Washington and Tehran after they reached an impasse, noting there is limited cooperation and coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv.

In an interview with “Welat TV” on Friday, April 18, 2025, Ishaq declared, “This limited, not full-scale, war strategically aims to achieve a political resolution satisfactory to Israel concerning the Iranian nuclear file.”

He added, “The majority of media are understanding and supportive of Israel’s actions, though there are also criticisms.” “He pointed out that Trump wants to give Iran a chance in order to reach a peaceful resolution and resolve the dispute between them and Iran, “he said.

He said, “If Iran does not make the required concessions, circumstances will force Trump to resort to military force.”

Impact of the Israel-Iran War on Syria

Regarding the impact of regional tensions on Syria, Ishaq indicated that the current war puts political pressure on the Syrian administration and stressed the importance of distancing Syria and its people from any negative consequences for the country.

He said, “Syria must not be an arena for the Israeli-Iranian conflict, and Iran must move its allied forces that are still present active on Syrian soil and still hold power, which will lead to destabilization in Syria.”

On the relationship between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Ishaq pointed out that “the continued U.S. military presence in eastern Syria is sufficient to give a message to Damascus and regional powers that the solution for northeastern Syria lies in political dialogue.”

He added, “I expect there will be an understanding and consensus between Damascus and the SDF in the coming days, noting that Damascus realizes that the only solution is through dialogue and mutual understanding only.”
