The Central Bank of Syria has denied reports circulating on social media claiming that it has launched a new digital currency or any other form of currency, whether linked to the Syrian pound or to any foreign currency.

In a statement issued on Friday, December 12, 2025, the bank stressed that any activity or announcement related to a new currency, or to new monetary or financial instruments, can only be issued exclusively and officially by the Central Bank of Syria through its authorized channels.

The bank called on citizens and media outlets to exercise caution and avoid being misled by rumors or unverified news, urging them to rely solely on official statements issued by the bank regarding monetary and financial affairs in Syria.

Social media users had circulated claims alleging that al-Sharaa had launched a digital currency named “Amana.”

No Date Set for Currency Launch

Earlier this month, the Central Bank of Syria denied setting any final date for the launch of the new currency, affirming that work is continuing in accordance with approved technical and administrative stages.

It explained that it remains committed to implementing its planned currency replacement program in coordination with all relevant authorities involved in the process.

In mid-September, Central Bank Governor Abdul Qadir Hasriya told Reuters that Damascus had requested bids from international suppliers to print new banknotes, as part of efforts to support the local currency, which has suffered a sharp decline in value.

He confirmed that Syria aims to “complete the process within three months.” Syria plans to issue new banknotes while removing two zeros from its currency, in an attempt to restore public confidence in the Syrian pound, which has lost much of its value.
