On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, received the newly appointed Vatican Ambassador to Iraq, Mirosław Wachowski.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister congratulated the ambassador on assuming his new role and reaffirmed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s full support for the success of his mission, according to a statement from the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region.

For his part, the Vatican ambassador conveyed the gratitude and appreciation of His Holiness the Pope to the prime minister for supporting and protecting the rights of Christians and all communities, as well as for promoting a culture of peaceful coexistence in the Kurdistan Region.

He also noted that Kurdistan holds a special place in the heart of His Holiness the Pope, who continues to pray for the region's progress, prosperity, and peace.

The meeting also included discussions on the reforms being implemented by the Kurdistan Regional Government and the latest developments in talks regarding the formation of the new federal government.
