Syrian Energy Ministry: Water Discharge Through Euphrates Dam Reduced by 100 Cubic Meters per Second

The Syrian Ministry of Energy announced that technical teams at the Euphrates Dam General Establishment have begun a partial closure of Spillway Gate No. 3 as water inflows from Turkey continue to decline.

The measure has reduced water discharge by 100 cubic meters per second, bringing the total flow through the dam to approximately 1,100 cubic meters per second.

The ministry stated on Friday, 5 June 2026, that technical and engineering teams continue to monitor water conditions and affirmed their readiness to take the necessary operational measures to ensure the safety of water facilities and maintain stable conditions along the Euphrates River.

Over the past few days, vast areas along both banks of the Euphrates River in Deir Ez-Zour and Raqqa governorates have experienced a significant rise in water levels due to the opening of the Euphrates Dam spillway gates to maintain the dam's operational readiness following increased water inflows from Turkey.

The rise in water levels caused varying degrees of damage to agricultural lands and water pumping stations, prompting an urgent government response through the formation of a joint operations room to monitor the situation and coordinate efforts among relevant authorities to protect residents and minimize losses.
