The Syrian Interior Ministry announced that its Counterterrorism Directorate has arrested Ghassan Assaf, who previously served as the office director of former Brigadier General Suhail al-Hassan with the rank of first assistant in the security apparatus of the Assad regime.

In a statement issued on Sunday, June 7, 2026, the ministry said that Assaf was among those allegedly involved in committing “horrific massacres” against civilians in the western countryside of Aleppo. It added that he continued his activities following what it described as the “liberation of the country” by engaging in acts aimed at destabilizing the state.

The statement further alleged that the suspect was involved in recruiting “terrorist” cells and inciting hostile activities, in addition to being responsible for bomb attacks targeting the Public Security Directorate and its institutions during the recent period.

The ministry confirmed that the competent authorities are continuing legal procedures and investigations against Ghassan Assaf in preparation for referring him to the judiciary so that he may “receive a just punishment,” according to the statement.
