U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack said that accountability is the cornerstone of reconciliation, describing the launch of legal proceedings against individuals implicated in the Suwayda events as an important step toward restoring confidence in state institutions and advancing the reconciliation process.

In a post on X on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Barrack praised the Syrian government for pursuing accountability and working to strengthen the country's reunification efforts. He added that the future of Sweida lies within a sovereign Syria, where the Druze are recognized as an essential component of a state moving beyond conflict toward peace, stability, and prosperity.

Barrack's remarks came in response to an announcement by Ammar Ezzaddin, spokesperson for the National Committee investigating the Suwayda events, who said that the Syrian Ministry of Justice, in coordination with the committee, has initiated legal proceedings against a number of individuals accused of involvement in the violence that took place in the province.
